This is a tip of the hat to the Neue Sachlichkeit painters.
Since I posted this image, I have done quite a bit of work on the varnish of this painting. It has an interesting texture now-- like a beat-up, shiny table top. As I was putting the last touches on it, my mind kept repeating the phrase 'a man of impenetrable gloss.'
